A BODY OF ARTICHOKES
On a cold winter day, I am cleaning artichokes.
I think of her.
She was like that slow-simmered lentil stew or hearty broth — full of substance and presence, nourishing body and soul.
That is who she was: nurturing, loving, joyful, giving, strong and powerful.
And among those thoughts, an idea comes to me: "If I had to paint your body, Mama, I would do it with these artichoke hearts — like a true woman of Tudela, shaped and nourished by the waters of the Ebro."
I feel her smile and approve of the idea.
